Remote Applications
Remote applications are programs that are running on computers that are not at Technet.
Technet connects to these computers using Telnet so you may use them. The advantage of this
approach is that the data is absolutely current: you are seeing the data as the clerks at the
government agency are seeing them.
However, the way you use each remote application varies. Read the documentation for that
application. The way you access remote applications is the same.
Access to remote databases begins by launching a Telnet session from your Web Browser.
When a Telnet session begins, a Telnet client is launched. This window is not a graphical screen
like Netscape, Internet Explorer, QMosaic or other graphical Web browser. It is a
character-based (text) interface.
You are required to login before your telnet session begins. To login, type
Your_technet_username and press [Tab] or click on the Password: field. Type
Your_technet_password and press [Enter] or click on
.
TIP:
Once you have logged in to one remote application, as long as you keep your Web browser
running, you shouldn't need to type in Your_technet_username or
Your_technet_password again.
HINT: Make a bookmark for your favorite applications. This will make it easier to access them
again later.
Each remote application has its own way of exiting--see the documentation for that particular
application on how to exit it. However, even when you exit normally, you may have to close your
Telnet client, otherwise it will continue to use resources. (If your Telnet program automatically
exits when the last connection is closed, this is not true). If you launch the same application again
or launch another appplication, another Telnet client will be launched.
Emergency exit
If you are ever unable to exit normally, you may close your Telnet client before the connection to
the remote application has ended as an emergency way of exiting. You may receive a prompt
asking if you're sure: click
.
