About Background Check

The Department of Public Safety and New Mexico Technet have joined forces to allow an online checking of the Background check database at DPS. Please note that Technet can only tell you whether a person has a match in the DPS Background check database, and not why they are in the database. If you wish to find out why they are in the database (a small percentage of people in the database are victims, not offenders) contact DPS.

NOTE: You must be approved by the Department of Public Safety to use the Criminal Background Check service. Please see the DPS Application page for the form you must fill out before you can be granted access.

NOTE: Technet has changed the Background Check application to require a four digit year.

Searching

To search, you must know the last name, date of birth, and social security number. The date of birth must be entered in a dd-MMM-yyyy format:

Example: You wish to look up John Doe, who was born April 1, 1966 and has a social security number of 000-00-000.

In the Last Name field, enter "DOE". In the Date of Birth field enter "01-APR-1966". For Social Security Number field, enter "000-00-0000". Click Search.

If there is no match, the message BASED ON THE INFORMATION PROVIDED, NO FINGERPRINT SUPPORTED RECORDS WERE FOUND FOR THIS INDIVIDUAL will display.

If there is a match, the message UNABLE TO PROCESS QUERY. PLEASE FORWARD BACKGROUND REQUEST WITH APPROPRIATE RELEASE FORM TO THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY 4491 CERRILLOS RD SANTA FE, NM 87504-1628 will display. This means that there is a match, but DPS would like you to send a AUTHORIZATION FOR RELEASE OF INFORMATION signed by the subject of the request in order to ensure that you have a right to access these details.

You may receive other error messages. Typically, these result from not filling in one of the fields correctly.

Example: You enter April 1, 1966 as 01-APR-66. You will see this error message:

A valid Date of Birth must be in DD-MON-YYYY format to obtain background information.

Click Back and re-enter the Date of Birth as 01-APR-1966 and click Search again to redo the search.

If you mis-enter the social security number, you will receive this error message:

A valid Social Security number must be in ###-##-#### format to obtain background information

Make sure you entered the correct number of digits.

NOTE: If the lookup cannot be handled automatically, you must forward the AUTHORIZATION FOR RELEASE OF INFORMATION to DPS with the signature of the person who is being looked up. They will then reply via postal mail with the results.
