About Brady Bill Checks
Searching
New Mexico Technet, in conjunction with the Department of Public Safety, is offering instant Brady Bill checks, which will allow gun dealers to determine at the point of sale whether a buyer is eligible to purchase a firearm, thus eliminating a waiting period.
NOTE: You must be approved by the Department of Public Safety to use the Brady Bill Check service. Please see the DPS Application page for the form you must fill out before you can be granted access.
NOTE: Due to FBI regulations, you must dial directly into New Mexico Technet to use the Brady Bill Check. You cannot dial into another Internet Service Provider and access the Brady Bill database via the Web without first dialing into Technet.
Enter the Buyer's name, Date of Birth, Social Security Number, State of Residence, Purpose Code, Race and Sex,Vendor name and FFL (Federal Firearms License) number. The Social Security Number field is optional. All other fields are required.
TIP: To speed up entry, you can use the Tab key to move to the next field once you have clicked in the first field.
Example: Joan Q. Public, a white woman who lives in New Mexico, wants to purchase a shotgun to go hunting. She was born on July 1, 1953, and her Social Security Number is 123-45-6789.
Enter Public in the Last name field. Enter Joan
in the First Name field. Enter 01-JUL-1953 in the
Date of Birth field, and 123-45-6789 in the Social Security
Number field (if you have it). Since she lives in New Mexico, just leave
the default entry of NM in the State
of Residence field. For the Race field, the default, White, is correct,
so leave that. Since Joan is female, click on the drop down menu (be sure to
click on the little arrow pointing down) and select Female, as shown:
Enter your Vendor name in the Vendor field, and your Federal Firearms License number. This number must be entered in parts. The fourth and the sixth fields can only have certain values, and you must select them from the dropdown menu.
Click Search.
If you have entered everything correctly, you will receive results. If you received an error message telling you the FFL number is wrong, click Back to return to the previous page and make sure you have entered it correctly, including use of the dropdown menu for the 4th and 6th fields.
You will receive either an affirmative or negative response most of the time. Be sure to print the results of each search for your records.
Occasionally, the search will not be able to tell if a person should be allowed to purchase a gun. When the process cannot be handled automatically, you will receive a reply by e-mail within three working days.
