Introduction

New Mexico Technet's online documentation uses writing conventions to help make the documentation clearer. In most browsers, links you have not selected appear as blue underlined text. Links you have previously selected appear as magenta underlined text.

The online documentation uses other colors and graphical symbols to help make reading these files easier. Below is an explanation of colors and other conventions used.

Premium Service Rates

Use of Technet's Premium Services incurs additional charges. Each online documentation section covering a Premium Service has a double dollar sign icon (show at left) that will take you to where you can find out the charge for Premium Services based on your account type.

Here is the full pricing information for Premium Services for the two account types that have access to Premium Services (NEDCOMM users do not have access to Premium Services):

Use of Colors

Examples will have the word EXAMPLE appear in green, all upper case, bold:

EXAMPLE: Type "CTS" [Enter] to enter the Courts Menu.

Notes will have the word NOTE: appear in bright red, all upper case, bold:

EXAMPLES:

NOTE: Be sure you're in the right search mode before running a learned search.
CAUTION: Beware of exceptions to the above instructions.
IMPORTANT: There is a premium charge for downloading each of these files.

Warnings will be DARK RED, BOLDED, ALL UPPERCASE.

EXAMPLE: THE SCREEN MUST BE RESET BEFORE YOU CAN CONTINUE

Use of Quotes

Anything you must type exactly as it appears will be in "bold and in quotes". Do not type the quotes: only type what's inside the quotes.

EXAMPLE: Type "CD\KERMIT" [Enter] at the C:\prompt.

Type each character exactly as you see it, followed by the [Enter] key.

EXAMPLE: Type "library" [Enter] at the login: prompt.

Type "library" in all lower case letters, followed by the [Enter] key.

CAUTION: There are times when you must type the quotes (" "). In such instances, the instructions will appear with single quotes (' ') enclosed in the quoted instructions.

EXAMPLE: Type: "AND F BT 'JAN 01, 1989' 'JAN 01, 1990'" [Enter]

When typing the quoted instructions, substitute the single quotes (' ') with standard quotes (" "). In the instructions in the example above, you would actually type: AND F BT "JAN 01, 1989" "JAN 01, 1990"

Messages

Messages that appear on the screen will be Bold.

EXAMPLE:Thirty-nine documents found.

Whenever you must supply the information, the text will be in Bold_italics, with the first letter capitalized.

Optional Information

If this information is optional, it will be enclosed in parenthesis (...).

EXAMPLES

Enter Filename1 (Filename2) and press [Enter].
Instead of typing the word in Bold_italics, enter the actual filename. You may type a second filename if you wish, but it is not required.
Enter Your_technet_password and press [Enter].
Instead of typing the word in Bold_italics, enter your actual password.

Non-typing Keys

Any non-typing key will appear with brackets around it:

Some non-typing keys are: [Tab], [Space], [Up] (Up Arrow), [Dn] (Down Arrow), [Lt] (Left Arrow), [Rt] (Right Arrow), [PgUp], [PgDn], [Shift], [Alt], [Ctrl], [Esc], etc.

EXAMPLES:

Type [F1] to continue.
[Ctrl]-C means to hold down the Control key, and while you are still holding it, type the letter next to it (C, for instance), and then release both keys.

The Letter O and the Number 0

It is easy to confuse an upper case O and the number 0. This can cause a great deal of confusion and annoyance. Make sure you're typing the right one.

EXAMPLES:

Type "O" to Set Options. This means type the letter O.
Type "0" to exit the browser. This means type the number 0.

Reference

Many Technet services share the same application. Rather than repeat instructions for using these applications for each service, the corresponding reference section contains general instructions about how to access information from the service. These reference sections are identified by a green box with the specific reference section shown by its initials. Click on the box to jump to the specified reference section.

[SM] This menu item or topic has a SEARCHmate database. Refer to the SEARCHmate section of the manual for instructions.

[BR] Indicates that the menu item of topic contains a Browser document. Refer to the Browser section for instructions.

[GUI][LX] These symbols point to guides for Graphical Web Browsers ([GUI]) and Lynx (Text Web Browser) ([LX]).

[" "] A red box with a yellow symbol indicates a link to a cautionary note or special instructions that apply either to the line or section in which the box appears.

Large Documentation Sections

Some documentation sections are too large to be presented in a single file. In order to facilitate displaying these files on your screen, they are divided into multiple parts. Whenever this occurs, the other parts of the section are listed at the bottom of that section with links to the NEXT-> and <-PREVIOUS parts.

EXAMPLE: The Second District Court section is divided into three files: sdc-1.htm, sdc-2.htm, and sdc-3.htm.

Printing Large Documentation Sections

If you want to print the entire section, you must print all listed files.
EXAMPLE: To print the entire Second District Court section, you must print sdc-1.htm, sdc-2.htm, and sdc-3.htm.

Miscellaneous

DOS is not case sensitive. All DOS commands will use upper case to avoid confusion.

Many Internet systems are UNIX, which is case sensitive. Commands are usually lower case. Filenames should be typed exactly as you see them.

EXAMPLE: Type "more readme.TXT" [Enter]. Type "more readme.txt" [ENTER] to look at a different file.

We assume you have a hard drive, and it's called C:\. If it's some other letter, substitute that letter for C.

EXAMPLE: Your hard drive is drive E. Where it says Type "C:\SETUP.EXE" [Enter] type "E:\SETUP.EXE"[Enter] instead.

New Mexico Technet, Technet, and the acronym NMT are all synonymous.

Look in the glossary for other terms.
