Technet's users can use the Eudora Light e-mail client. This allows you to store your mail on your hard drive rather than on Technet's computers. Additionally, many people feel that the graphically-based Eudora Light mail client is easy to use and has a number of useful features.
To download Eudora Light, go to the Eudora Light Mail Client page. Make sure you download the appropriate version for your computer: there are versions available for Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and Macintosh. Note that although there is a version with a PGP Plugin available, Technet will only support Eudora Light itself.
The approximate download time for Eudora Light only is 45 minutes on a 28,800 bps modem, or 90 minutes for a 14,400 for the Windows version (approximately 5 Megabytes.)
The manual is only available in Adobe Acrobat format. You must download the Adobe Reader to view this file. Many newer software packages (especially web-related ones) automatically install Adobe Reader, so check to make sure you don't have it already before you download it.
The Adobe Reader is available free of charge at Adobe's web site.
Look under Start, Programs, Eudora Light, and select Eudora Light.
Go to the File menu and click Exit.
If the setup was done correctly, you should see a series of informational windows as Eudora contacts the mail server and retrieves your e-mail. You will then see the window below.

The left side of the window displays your Folders. The right side lists the messages in the currently selected folders. When you click on any message in this list, the text of the message is displayed in the right half of the window. (See Folders for more detail.)
NOTE: This window may appear somewhat different in Windows 3.1.
Eudora Light organizes your mail into Folders. Folders are collections of mail. When Eudora Light first starts, there are three Folders: In, Out, and Trash. In contains all the mail addressed to you that has been retrieved from Technet's mail server. Out contains copies of all mail you send to other people (assuming you have Keep copies of outgoing mail: turned on. ) Trash is where deleted email goes.
To select a folder, simply click on its name.
With a Folder open (see Folders) simply click on the message you wish to view. It will be displayed in the right half of the screen. You may need to scroll to see the full list of all of the messages. After reading the e-mail you can Reply, or you can send new e-mail to anyone.
All the following options take you to the Composition Window. See that section for how to use it.
Click the New Message button. You should see the Composition Window.
Click the subject of the e-mail you wish to reply to and click the Reply icon. This will send email
only to the person who sent the original message.
The text of the message you're replying to is quoted in the Composition Window.
Click the subject of the e-mail you wish to reply to and click the Reply All icon This will send email to
everyone: the person who sent the original message and anyone the original message is CCed to.
The text of the message you're replying to is quoted in the Composition Window.
Click the Forward icon. The text of the message you're forwarding is quoted in the Composition Window. Forwarding
is typically used to send the mail to other people to whom the message is relevant.
Eudora Light offers the ability to forward without adding the > marks traditionally added. This is called redirecting. The problem with redirecting is that if the forwarder adds text to the top of the message, it may appear to be part of the original message. Some mailing list administrators find that the confusion generated by this feature is enough that they insist their members not use this feature. The bottom line is that forwarding is a much more polite and less confusing way to pass along an email message.
This window is where you type your message. It can be used to send both e-mail and news, or both at the same time. If you're creating a new message, type in the e-mail address in the To: field and the subject.
You may also click the Address button on the main toolbar to use your address book entries. Simply click on the nickname you want to send e-mail to and click on the To: button.
Type the e-mail addresses of anyone you want copies sent to in the Cc: field. If you don't want the main recipient to see who the copies are going to, use the Bcc: (blind carbon copy) field .
If you're replying, the subject and the e-mail address are already filled in.

Type in the text of your e-mail in the lower area. (This area is normally larger.) When you're done, click Send. If you're online, the message should be sent immediately. If you are not online, the message will be sent the next time you log into Technet.
TIP: Press [TAB] to move from one field of the Composition Window to the next.
The attach function allows you to send files through email. Click the Attach File button and browse to the file you want to send and click on Open. If you receive an attachment, you may need the click the
button to tell Eudora to download the whole message the next time you connect to Technet.
CAUTION: Technet strongly discourages sending attachments that are larger than 500 Kilobytes in size. Technet does not allow messages larger than 10 Megabytes to be sent. E-mail was not designed to send large files and the results are unpredictable and may cause difficulty downloading other email for both the sender and the recipient. Additionally, even if everything does work, the download times for large files can be substantial and the long download time may be confused with a crash, and the e-mail download may be stopped, causing other problems.
Select the message you want to print by clicking on the subject and clicking the Print icon. Click
to print.
Select the message you want to delete by clicking on its subject. From the Message menu, select Delete. This will move the mail to your Trash folder. If you want to clean up your Trash folder, click on Special and select the Empty Trash option. This will actually remove the mail from your hard drive.
With a message selected, click on the Transfer menu. You should see a drop-down menu showing all your folders. Select the folder you want to move the message to. If you pick New... you will be prompted for the name of the new folder and mailbox.
The address book keeps track of e-mail addresses so you don't have to. It allows you to specify nicknames so you can send email to "John" instead of "John.Q.Public@someplace.com".
Either while reading a message or with a message selected (see Reading Your Mail) click on the Special menu and select the Make Address Book Entry option. Eudora will automatically take the From address and Real name (if available). It will suggest a nickname: if you don't like it, change it. When you're done, click
.
EXAMPLE: You type in the nickname "John" for John Q. Public. The next time you want to send John an e-mail message, just type "John" in the To: field and his e-mail address will be filled in for you (in the actual message sent, not in the To: field you see. The message saved in your Out box will also only show the alias.) If you want to double check an address, look in the Address Book which is available under the Tools menu.
Under the Tools menu, select Address Book. Click on New, and type in the email addresses (or nicknames, or both) separated by commas.
EXAMPLE: You want to create a mailing list of your friends John, Mary, and Bob.
You click on the New button and type in the name of the mailing list (ie, friends). In the Address(es) field type in:
John, mary@somecollege.edu, bob@someplace.com
assuming that you have already entered John's e-mail address into a nickname. (See Adding E-Mail Addresses to the Address Book.)
Eudora Light allows a great deal of customization, including Plug-ins that extend the capabilities of Eudora Light. This document will deal only with selected built-in features of Eudora Light. Please download the full manual for more detail on all the options.
All of the available customization options are under the Tools menu, from the Options menu. The window displayed shows the current area selected on the left using icons. This window may be scrolled to view all the options. Typically, Eudora Light will save this window in the most recent position.
TIP: For more help in Windows 95, click on the ?icon in the upper right corner of the Options window. This will provide a cursor with a question mark, which may then be used to show help for each option simply by clicking on that option. On a Macintosh, click on the Help menu (also known as the Apple Guide menu) for more help while in Eudora Light. (This menu is located in the upper right corner, just to the left of the Finder icon.)
This is the section you fill out when you first start Eudora Light. This includes your POP account, your real name, and your Return address.
This section is identical to Getting Started except that it allows you to enter a different dial-up username than your email address username.
This section controls which hosts Eudora Light will use for your email. By default, the host listed in your POP username (entered under Getting Started) is used both for a POP server and SMTP server. (A POP server holds mail addressed to you, while an SMTP server is the machine that sends your email to its destination on the Internet.) If you need to enter a different POP or SMTP server, this is the place.
Check for mail every ___ minutes. The default is 10 minutes, which can be changed.
Skip messages over ____ K in size. This helps speed up mail downloading. If this option is selected, only a small portion of the message is downloaded and you can click on the
icon in the message to download the whole message.
Determine first unread message by:
Immediate Send: If this option is checked, all Send options are set to Immediate Send (but you must be connected to send).
Send on Check: Unless Immediate Send is checked, this causes e-mail messages that are Queued (waiting to be sent)to be sent whenever Eudora checks for mail.
Keep copies of outgoing mail: If this option is checked, a copy of any sent messages is saved in the Out folder. Otherwise, they are saved in the Trash folder.
Use Signature: If this option is checked, Eudora will automatically include a signature file for you. (To create one, click on Tools, Signatures, and select Standard. A text window will display: enter your email address, name, and any other contact information here and close the window, clicking Yes when asked to save.)
Screen Font: You may choose any font that your system has available.
Warn me when I: Start Eudora and it's not the default mailer.
If you don't want Eudora Light to ask you if it should be the default mail client, uncheck this option.
Intercept Netscape mailto URLs: In Windows, by default Eudora Light will intercept mailto: URLs from Netscape version 3.0. This means that if you are displaying a web page, and click on an email link, Eudora Light will automatically create an e-mail message with the To: address taken from that link. You may then type a subject and compose the message. This is useful because you can use Eudora Light for all your e-mail, and all of your sent mail messages will be saved in the same Eudora Light folder. If, for some reason, you do NOT want this to happen, click on the Tools menu, select Options and scroll the Category window down to Miscellaneous, and uncheck Intercept Netscape mailto URLs. Click OK when you're done.
