Introduction

This file is designed to help you setup your connection to New Mexico Technet. Also see the Frequently Asked Questions (or FAQ for short) which may answer other questions. See the Glossary for unfamiliar terms.

Hardware and Software Requirements

IBM

The minimum hardware is a 486 computer, with 8 Megabytes of RAM, an 80 Megabyte hard drive and a VGA monitor and graphics adapter.

Operating Systems: Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups, Windows 95 and Windows NT.

Technet recommends a minimum of 16 Megabytes of RAM while running Windows 95. 32 Megabytes of RAM is recommended for Windows NT.

You must have at least a 14,400 bps modem or higher (28,800 recommended). Currently, Technet supports up to 33,600 bps modems (56K in Albuquerque and Santa Fe).

You must also have a telephone line. A normal phone line can be used, but it will not be available for phone calls while you are connected to Technet.

Macintosh

You must have at least a 68030 chip, (anything but a Mac SE, Classic, LC, II series or Powerbook 100), 16 Megabytes of RAM, an 80 Megabyte hard drive, and a 256 Color monitor.

You must have at least System 7.1 (7.5 recommended), and a 14,400 bps modem or higher (28,800 recommended). If you're using a PowerPC, you must have Open Transport version 1.1. Currently, Technet supports up to 33,600 bps modems. (56K in Albuquerque and Santa Fe).

You must also have a telephone line. A normal phone line can be used, but it will not be available for phone calls while you are connected to Technet.

Disconnecting from New Mexico Technet

Netscape.

Windows 3.1: Close Netscape. The connection will be automatically terminated if you are not running any other Internet programs (such as NetTerm).

Windows 95: Close Netscape. Click on if you're not running any other Internet programs (such as NetTerm). You will be disconnected.

Internet Explorer: Consult your manual.

Home Page

Your home page should be set to: http://www.technet.nm.net so that you can have access to Technet's menu structure.

Netscape: This should already be automatically set. .

Qmosaic: Under the Tools menu, select Preferences. Click on the General Tab and type http://www.technet.nm.net in the Home Page box. Click [ OK ] to make the change.

Internet Explorer: Under the View menu, select Options. Click on the Navigation tab. Type http://www.technet.nm.net in the Address: box. Click on [ OK ] to make the change.
