Accessing SEARCHmate databases
This section describes access to opinions, rules, instructions and forms issued
by various State and Federal courts. Many of the databases are SEARCHmate databases
(
).
Please refer to this sections for detailed instructions on its use.

The New Mexico State Bar Association regulates the conduct of its members through the State Bar Advisory Committee. The Committee receives questions about proper conduct or procedure from Bar members and, basing their judgement upon the circumstances in each case, recommends a course of action. This recommendation sets a precedent that can be used by other lawyers who might later face similar circumstances.
The SEARCHmate formatted fields are:
Nbr-opinion Opinion Number. Category Category. Change-date (YYYY/MM/DD) Date of last change.
For formatted field searches:
Type N <> DFSJ (where DFSJ is a nonsense word) and press [Enter]. This will retrieve every opinion in the database.
Type N HAS 1987 and press [Enter]. This will retrieve every opinion from 1987.
Type N - 1993-4 and press [Enter]. this will retrieve opinion number 1993-4.
Type CA HAS CONDUCT and press [Enter]. This will retrieve every opinion dealing with conduct.
This site holds the Internet publications of the Legal Information Institute, a part of the Cornell Law School.
The server offers the LII's collection of recent and historic Supreme Court decisions, its hypertext versions of the full U.S. Code, U.S. Constitution, Federal Rules of Evidence and Civil Procedure, recent opinions of the New York Court of Appeals and commentary on them from the "liibulletin-ny" and other important legal materials -- federal, state, foreign and international.
This archive consists of over 7,000 Supreme Court opinions dating from 1937 through 1975, from volumes 300 through 422 of U.S. Reports. These Supreme Court decisions are from the U.S. Air Force FLITE ("Federal Legal Information Through Electronics") system.
The Opinions Database contains opinions issued by the New Mexico State Supreme Court and the New Mexico State Appeals Court from
The SEARCHmate formatted fields are:
Nbr-case The case number: prefix SC for Supreme
Court, COA for Court of Appeals
Name-case The case name.
Date-filed (YYYY/MM/DD) Date the case was first filed.
County County where the case was originally
tried.
Judge Name of the original presiding Judge.
Author Name of the opinion's author.
Bulletin The volume number, issue number and
date of the State Bar Bulletin that
contains the opinion.
Nmcit New Mexico citation number.
P2dcit The P2D citation number.
Cert-info Certiorari information.
Rehearing Rehearing date.
Change-date (YYYY/MM/DD) Date of last change.
For formatted field searches:
Type NB <> DFSJ (where DFSJ is a nonsense word) and press [Enter]. This will retrieve every document in the database.
Type J HAS judge's_name (where judge's_name is the first or last name or partial first or last name of the Judge you want) and press [Enter].
EXAMPLES: Type: J HAS BROOKS[Enter]
to retrieve all cases tried by all Judges whose first or last name is Brooks.
Type: J HAS "ROBERT BROOKS"[Enter]
to retrieve all cases tried by Judge Robert Brooks.
NOTE: This example will not retrieve cases tried by Robert L. Brooks.
The examples above can be used for NAme-case, COunty and Author.
The following example retrieves (a) all cases filed in 1994 in (b) Taos County:
(a) Type: D = 1994[Enter]
(b) Type: AND CO HAS TAOS[Enter]
The current New Mexico Supreme Court Opinions are available in WordPerfect format (recent versions of Word should be able to read this format as well).
The opinions are listed by case title. If the opinion is not recent, you should check in the archive.
The State of the Judiciary address from the Honorable Pamela B. Minzner, to the State Legislature. To save, select File, Save As in your web browser. This file is in text format, which almost all word processors should be able to read.
WordPerfect Version of the State of the Judiciary:
This file is in WordPerfect format. It should also be readable by current versions of Microsoft Word.
This is a list of the citations of the cases before the Supreme Court. It lists the Name version of the case, the NMCIT version, and the P2DCIT, if any.
The list of Certiorari changes periodically as requests for the Writ of Certiorari are granted, denied or terminated. The certiorari List allows lawyers to check the status of Certiorari rulings soon after they occur.
The federal local opinion data base includes an index of approximately 1200 published and unpublished decisions of the United States District Court issued in 1987, 1988 and 1989. Full-text of these decisions may be obtained by calling the reference desk at the University of New Mexico School of Law Library (277-5131) or the New Mexico Supreme Court Law Library (827-4850).
In addition, the federal opinion database also includes full-text of decisions issued after October 1, 1989.
The SEARCHmate formatted fields are:
Id Document ID number. DOcket-num Docket number. TYpe Type of case: CIVIL, CRIMINAL or MISC. Name Title of the Case Judge Judge presiding over the case. DAte-filed (YYYY/MM/DD) Date the case was filed. CItation Citation number (if any). TOpic General topic of case (if any). SUBTOPIC1 Subordinate topic (if any). SUBTOPIC2 Subordinate topic (if any). CHange-date (YYYY/MM/DD) Date the record was updated.
For formatted field searches:
Type I <> DFS (where DFS is a nonsense word) and press [Enter]. This will retrieve every Opinion in the database.
The following example will retrieve all cases that were filed in 1992:
Type DA BT "1992/1/1" "1993/1/1"[Enter]
To view the latest opinions:
1. Get the change date by referring to the date listed under this selection (FED) on theU.S. DISTRICT COURT menu (Updated dd-MON-yyyy) or by typing UPD and pressing [Enter] from the same menu.
2. From the formatted search screen in SEARCHmate, type:
CH >= yyyy/mm/dd (where yyyy/mm/dd is the change date) and press [Enter].
EXAMPLE: Type: CH >= 1994/9/3[Enter]

The SEARCHmate formatted fields are:
Nbr-rule Instruction number. TItle-rule Instruction title. Effective The effective date of the instruction (YYYY/MM/DD). TYpe-civil Instruction type.
This database contains the Uniform Jury Instructions for criminal cases. These instructions are explained to jurors by the Judge before a case begins. The instructions vary depending upon the type of case and the circumstances.
The SEARCHmate formatted fields are:
Nbr-criminal Instruction number. TItle-criminal Instruction title. Effective The effective date of the instruction (YYYY/MM/DD). TYpe-criminal Instruction type.
The following examples apply to the three SEARCHmate databases described above:
For formatted field searches:
Type N <> DFSJ (where DFSJ is a nonsense word) and press [Enter]. This will retrieve every document in the database.
Type N = #-### or ##-### (where #-### or ##-### is the rule or instruction number) and press [Enter].
EXAMPLE: Type: N = 5-43[Enter]
to retrieve rule number 5-43.
Type N HAS "SP REG" and press [Enter] to retrieve all Special Regulations in the database.
The following example will retrieve all rules or instructions that went into effect in 199:
Type E BT "199/1/1" "1991/1/1"[Enter]
This database contains the standards and procedures that people involved in court cases must follow. The New Mexico Supreme Court approves all court rules and regulations in the database.
The SEARCHmate formatted fields are:
Nbr-rule Rule number.
TItle-rule Title of the rule.
Effective The effective date of the rule (YYYY/MM/DD).
TYperule The rule type, e.g., "PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT",
"MAGISTRATE COURT CIVIL", "DISTRICT COURT
CRIMINAL", "MUNICIPAL", METROPOLITAN COURT
CIVIL RULES", etc.
This database contains the standards and procedures that people involved in state district court cases must abide by. The following districts list rules in their own SEARCHmate database:
LOCAL DISTRICT COURT RULES 1 1st District Court 2 2nd District Court 3 3rd District Court 4 4th District Court 5 5th District Court 6 6th District Court 7 7th District Court 8 8th District Court 9 9th District Court 10 10th District Court 11 11th District Court 13 13th District Court
The SEARCHmate formatted fields are:
Id ID number of the Rule. Title Title of the Rule. Number Rule number. Change_date (YYYY/MM/DD) Date the Rule was last changed.
For formatted field searches:
Type TI = "TABLE OF CONTENTS" and press [Enter].
This will retrieve the Table of Contents for the selected district which lists all the rules contained in the database. Use this to quickly select the rules you want.
Type I <> DFS (where DFS is a nonsense word) and press [Enter]. This will retrieve every Rule in the database.
The following example will retrieve all Forms that went into effect in 1992:
Type: C BT "1992/1/1" "1993/1/1"[Enter]
This database contains the standards and procedures that people involved in federal court cases in the New Mexico District must follow.
The SEARCHmate formatted fields are:
Id ID number of the Rule. TItle Title of the Rule. Number Rule Number. Effective_date (MM/DD/YY) Date the Rule became effective. TYpe CRIMINAL or CIVIL. Change_date (YYYY/MM/DD) Date the Rule was last changed.
For formatted field searches:
Type I <> DFS (where DFS is a nonsense word) and press [Enter]. This will retrieve every Rule in the database.
Type TY = CRIMINAL and press [Enter] to retrieve all Criminal Rules in the database.
This database contains the different standard civil forms used in legal actions and trials.
The SEARCHmate formatted fields are:
Nbr-civil Instruction number. Title-civil Instruction title. Effective The effective date of the instruction (YYYY/MM/DD). Type-civil Form type.
This database contains the different standard criminal forms used in legal actions and trials.
The SEARCHmate formatted fields are:
Nbr-criminal Instruction number. Title-criminal Form title. Effective The effective date of the form (YYYY/MM/DD). Type-criminal Form type.
The following examples apply to the three SEARCHmate databases described above:
For formatted field searches:
Type N <> DFSJ (where DFSJ is a nonsense word) and press [Enter]. This will retrieve every form in the database.
For Civil Forms:
Type TI HAS "CIVIL COMPLAINT" and press [Enter] to retrieve all civil complaint forms..
Type N = 4-72 and press [Enter] to retrieve form number 4-72 Motion for Default Judgment.
For Criminal Forms:
Type TI HAS "CRIMINAL COMPLAINT" and press [Enter] to retrieve all civil complaint forms..
Type N = 9-21 and press [Enter] to retrieve form number 9-21 Warrant for Arrest.
This database contains court forms for the following District Courts:
First Judicial District Court Second Judicial District Court Third Judicial District Court Fourth Judicial District Court Fifth Judicial District Court
The SEARCHmate formatted fields are:
Id ID number of the Form. Title Title of the Form. Document Document ID number. DIstrict District where the Form applies. Change_date (YYYY/MM/DD) Date the Form was last changed.
For formatted field searches:
Type T = "TABLE OF CONTENTS" and press [Enter].
This will retrieve the Table of Contents document for each district. Use this to quickly select the Forms you want from the desired district.
Type I <> DFS (where DFS is a nonsense word) and press [Enter]. This will retrieve every Form in the database.
Type DI = district (where district is FIRST, SECOND, THIRD or FIFTH) and press [Enter].
This will retrieve the Forms only for the selected district.
The following example will retrieve all Forms that went into effect in 1992:
Type: C BT "1992/1/1" "1993/1/1"[Enter]
More than 40 blank legal forms are available that range from Affidavit of Due and Diligent Search to Writ of Garnishment & Return.
Click on the
icon for a preview of the file. If it is indeed the file you want, click on
the name of the file and save it. The files are in both WordPerfect 5.1 and
WordPerfect 6.1 formats. Any recent version of WordPerfect or Microsoft Word
or any modern word processor should be able to import most if not all of the
formatting.
